Wood is a natural, renewable and environmentally friendly product, one of the worlds few truly natural and sustainable building products.

Growing trees act as ‘carbon sinks’ that absorb carbon dioxide. After harvesting and manufacture of timber products, the timber continues to store carbon dioxide resulting in finished goods like building materials and furniture, helping in the battle against climate change.

Today certification of timber products goes hand-in-hand with a desire for our industry to have pride in what we manufacture and sell, especially against non-timber alternative building materials.

Gunns Limited was the first Australian company to achieve accreditation under the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) for its forest management in 2003.

The scope of Gunns AFS certification has now been extended to include the Auspine plantation base, which is now certified under the Gunns' AFS Certification certificate. The Jarrah log supply that Gunns source has also recently been accredited with AFS certification.

By buying certified wood products from Gunns, you can be assured that you are not contributing to illegal logging, which accounts for a staggering $400 million of wood products imported into Australia every year.

Gunns has in excess of 200,000 hectares of high quality plantations to provide wood and paper-based products into the future. Gunns continually plants and regenerates more forests than it harvests to ensure our ongoing sustainability and is verified against the highest national and international standards of forest management.

Gunns estimates that we and our predecessor companies have grown over 200 million seedlings, to plant in its softwood and hardwood plantations in Tasmania since plantation first began in the 1940’s. This amount of plantation establishment is equivalent to the sequestration of 72 million CO2 equivalent tonnes each year when mature. This is enough sequested CO2 to offset the emissions generated by 120,000 Australians over a period of 21 years.
